Borona is not only a game reserve but also a working ranch ( named after the local Borana cattle) on the Laikipia Plateau, with Mount Kenya to the south, and mountains and the arid north. Borana Lodge is set on the edge of the Samangua Valley, situated on a 14,000 hectare ranch, just north of the equator, at an altitude of just under 2,000 m ft. Since the Borana and Lewa are unfenced, wildlife can roam freely between these reserves; The area is a haven for a wide diversity of wildlife, including lion, elephant, Jackson’s hartebeest, buffalo, giraffe, Patas monkeys and great herds of antelope roaming the plains, while the cool forest shelters bushbuck, colobus monkeys and leopard.

The property is a small, luxurious lodge, with eight cottages, and the option between large double beds or twin beds. Four of the cottages have their own veranda, while two sets of cottages share a veranda and are perfect for families. Each cottage also has an open-fireplace. There is a swimming pool.

The lodge overlooks a dam which fills with the floodwater flowing off the surrounding hills, and which has become the local watering hole for all the wildlife in the area providing much for guests to watch.

Borana is renowned for its horse riding adventures. Other activities include game drives, bush walks, mountain biking, relaxing in a blind or a tree house, night fly camping and ranch visits. Guests are invited to the work undertaken with neighboring communities

Borana Lodge can be reached by road (a long 4-hour drive from Nairobi and a 1-hour drive from Nanyuki), or by air: there are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to neighbouring Lewa Downs, or by private charter to the Borana airstrip.
